OCI members to vet report on Olympic tickets scandal

The Olympic Council of Ireland last night held an emergency general meeting to consider a report on its governance arrangements in the wake of the Rio Olympics ticketing controversy.

After the meeting, the OCI said the “draft” report from Deloitte was circulated to committee members for the first time last night.

It said the report will be reviewed over the coming days by committee members for “factual accuracies”.

“Deloitte will then finalise its report and the report will be published soon after,” a spokeswoman added.

Consultancy service Deloitte was appointed last month to create an independent report reviewing how OCI is governed under its current constitution and how comparative sporting bodies govern themselves.

In its statement after last night’s meeting, OCI said that once an independent Grant Thornton report into ticketing arrangements in Rio is complete, it will be sealed and passed by Grant Thornton directly to Judge Carroll Moran to consider as part of his non-statutory inquiry.

“At no point has the OCI executive committee had sight of the report,” said the OCI. “It is expected that the completed report will be with Judge Moran by November 15.”

Ahead of the meeting, the Federation of Irish Sport had demanded the OCI make the Deloitte report available in full to its 36-member federations immediately after its meeting concluded and to publish it in full.

“The OCI has been in crisis since the Rio Olympics and has severely damaged its relationship with Irish sport,” said the federation’s chief executive, James Galvin. “This report will provide the first insight into what went wrong with its governance and how it can begin to be repaired.

“We believe that without open, honest and timely communication from the OCI, rehabilitating the organisation cannot happen. This first step needs to be transparency with its stakeholders about the Deloitte report.”
