Happy Stephen Kenny urges Dundalk to remain grounded for final push

Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny has called on his side to keep their feet on the ground in the wake of last night’s 2-1 win over Cork City, insisting “there’s nothing achieved yet.”

The Co Louth side opened up a four point lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division table with just five games to play courtesy of a Mark McNulty own goal and a Daryl Horgan screamer in the first-half.

That prompted Cork boss John Caulfield to admit the champions have their “hands on the trophy” but Kenny said there is still work to do before his side can start celebrating their third title in-a-row.

“There’s nothing achieved yet,” he said. “We’ve got to go again against Shamrock Rovers on Friday. We’ve got two big games on Friday and Monday against Rovers and Longford. We’ll get a tough game on Friday but that can give us the impetus now to push on again. We won’t listen to anyone else. We’ll just concentrate on ourselves and keep going. There’s great history with the three in-a-row and that’s our ambition.” Kenny was full of praise for his side for finishing strongly and restricting Cork in the aftermath of Mark O’Sullivan’s goal on 56 minutes.

“In the second-half we had the better chances but I couldn’t believe we conceded from the first chance in the second-half. That was a bit of a kick in the teeth for us but we showed our ability not to sit back and push on and look for a third and not just invite pressure.”

Kenny put the win down to the individual brilliance of the “special” Daryl Horgan, who reiterated the view the title race was far from over.

“It’s a great win and brilliant to have the four point gap but we’ve got five very difficult games to go. As of Cork. I’d expect them to win their five so we need four wins now and that will be the key for us,” said Horgan.

Cork boss John Caulfield said the defeat was a blow but encouraged his side to take the title race as close to the wire as possible “The crucial thing for us is we’ve had no chance all year,” he said. “We’ve been playing catch up and it’s been difficult. It’s back to four points. They’ve their hands on the title but the most important thing for us is to push it right to the wire.

“We came to win tonight but at the same time you don’t know. One draw and you’re back in it but the most important thing for us is to win our matches.”

The Cork boss said his side weren’t too pleased with some decisions but admitted Dundalk were the better side.
