The €100m expansion programme will initially see stores opening in Ennistymon, Co Clare; Trim, Co Meath; and Leixlip, Co Kildare in early 2017.

The retailer said it is currently in the planning process for an additional five new stores in 2017 as well as nine extensions to its existing locations.

Aldi currently has 128 stores across the country employing 3,200 staff and, according to the Kantar Worldpanel panel figures, accounts for 11.3% of the Irish grocery market.

It has had a presence in Ireland since 1999 and currently has almost 200 Irish suppliers.

The retailer said opportunities will be available for area manager, store manager, assistant store manager, and store assistant positions.

The company pointed out that it introduced the living wage on February 1 this year for all entry-level positions.

Giles Hurley, the company’s group managing director in Ireland, said the products it has secured from its Irish suppliers had been key to its growth and success here.

“We have a very aggressive store opening plan for the next three years, planning to open 20 new stores plus additional extensions to our current store portfolio,” said Mr Hurley. “We are building on the sustained growth we have achieved in the last few years and will be creating an additional 400 jobs.

“We are committed to increasing the number of Irish products on our shelves and as we grow and open more stores, there will be more and more opportunities for Irish suppliers to work with us.”

Meanwhile, Penneys has opened the doors of its new store in Liffey Valley, which is the 37th Penneys store in Ireland. The location has 53,900sq ft of retail space spread over three floors and also has an Insomnia cafe instore.

The store is part of a new, western end, €26m investment for Liffey Valley Shopping Centre’s retail, leisure and community facilities, including six new restaurants, a cinema upgrade, and a new civic space.
