Man arrested after discovery of a suspect device denied bail
A Limerick man who was arrested following the discovery of a suspect device in Moyross earlier this week has been denied bail.
Thirty-four-year-old Anthony McNamara, of Ballygrennan Close, Moyross, has been charged with making an explosive substance on an unknown date, contrary to Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act, 1883.
Garda Denis O'Leary told today's special sitting of Limerick District Court how the suspect device discovered in a wheelie bin outside Mr. McNamara's home, during a planned search at around 10:30 am on Thursday morning.
It was described as metal cylinder, containing a fuse and an explosive substance, which was wrapped in a pair of gloves.
The Army Bomb Disposal Team were called and arrived on the scene shortly before 2 o'clock.
The area was cordoned off and surrounding houses were evacuated.
They identified and made safe a viable pipe bomb and the scene was declared free of explosives just before 3 o'clock.
Garda O'Leary told today's special sitting that when the charge was put to him, Mr McNamara responded: "It wasn't an explosive device".
Gardai objected to bail on a number of grounds, including that the accused would engage with serious crime.
Judge Mary Larkin refused bail, and remanded Mr McNamara in custody to appear before Limerick District Court this coming Tuesday.
