Fitzgerald Park in Cork will host a pop-up screening of the 1986 coming of age, comedy-drama classic Stand By Me, organised by Happenings Cork, who have teamed up with 7Up and Cork City Council to create fun events in public spaces at short notice.

The Happenings concept works by taking advantage of good weather and instant communication to gather hundreds of people at short notice. It has staged events in Dublin, Kilkenny, Limerick and Cork.

“We strive to give green public spaces beautiful open air events allowing people to enjoy their city in a meaningful way,” Happenings founder Peter O’Brien said.

Tickets will be available at the gate, which opens at 8pm, with the screening starting at dusk, around 9.45pm. The event will also feature entertainment from DJ Dr Herringbone Dread and food will be available on site.

Meanwhile, the launch of what could be the world’s first ever sonic installation on a cable-car will take place in West Cork on Sunday.

The Compartments recording, a collaboration between Annette Skade and her son Cormac Mac an Fhalla, features three of her poems set to his electronic music, and will be installed on the Dursey Island cable-car for a week as part of Beara Arts Festival.

Annette Skade, from Manchester, has lived on the Beara Peninsula since 1989. Cormac grew up in Garnish, and studied music production at Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa in Cork and Pulse College in Dublin. He now works as an engineer at Windmill Lane in Dublin, and also writes and performs music.

Compartments is one of a series of ‘sonic boxes’ installed at various locations around the Beara Peninsula for the duration of the arts festival. The others will feature new compositions by local musicians David Harmax and Ian Geraghty.
