Ireland needs to hold the line on its corporate tax policies, if pressure grows in Europe to harmonise taxation laws, according to a Fine Gael MEP.
Brian Hayes believes the country could pay a price for EU support on the backstop.
Hayes says Europe needs to be reminded Ireland demonstrated solidarity with the European Union in the past:
"We've got to decouple both issues," he said.
"I think the red line has to be on things like corporate tax and if people do come knocking on the door looking for some price to be extracted for all of this solidarity, they need to be reminded that Ireland showed solidarity during the economic crisis in terms of stabilising the economic system and making sure that banks didn't go down," he added.
