Women urged to 'step up' ahead of International Women's Day event at Thomond Park

Women must be ready to seize opportunities and promotions and take for State board positions, the president of women’s business organisation Network Ireland has said.

Cork native Helen Wycherley was speaking at details were announced of Network Ireland’s event at Thomond Park, the home of Munster Rugby, on March 8 to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The event will celebrate women in business and will also focus on the importance of building resilience, Network Ireland said.

It said hundreds of women from around Ireland are expected to attend the conference, from budding entrepreneurs, SME owners, professionals and leaders in indigenous and multinational organisations to non-profits, charities, arts and the public sector.

Ms Wycherley said: “Through my presidency of Network Ireland, I want to help women to fulfil their potential by empowering them to step up and do more. That is why I’ve chosen #StepUp as the theme for 2019.

“I want to help and support our members, to do more and be more. So this year will be all about empowering women to step up to the challenge, to be ready to seize opportunities as they arise, to be confident and go for that promotion, apply for that grant application, go on State boards or take more risks and to say “I can” not “I might” or “maybe”.”

Network Ireland is partnering with the Local Enterprise Office, Limerick for the International Women's Day event.

Oscar-nominated Cartoon Saloon, former Ireland rugby international, Fiona Steed and performance coach Gerry Hussey will be in attendance for the event, emceed by journalist Deirdre O’Shaughnessy. The theme for this year’s conference is #BuildingResilience.

Established in 1983, Network Ireland now has almost 1,200 members across 15 branches around Ireland. Each year they organise up to 200 events for members.
